Dr Tan Yew Oo is currently the consultant medical oncologist and hematologist with Singapore Oncology Consultants at Gleneagles Cancer Centre and Mt Alvernia Hospital.

He was formerly the Professor of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS), and Chief of Medicine at National University Hospital (NUH) and Head, Division of Hematology-Oncology. He was a tenured faculty staff of NUS from 1978 till 1993 and during that tenure, he was instrumental in setting up the specialty of Medical Oncology at Singapore General Hospital and later National University Hospital. He has been the mentor and teacher to many doctors including many prominent medical oncologists in Singapore.

He published extensively and was invited to speak at regional and international medical meetings. He continues to be invited to lecture at many local and regional medical conferences and seminars.

After he went into private practice, he remained active in medical education and postgraduate training. He served in the Specialist Training Committee of Medical Oncology, Academy of Medicine/MOH, Singapore, Chairman of the National Committee on Cancer Care, Medical Research Council and consultant to the Health Science Authority. He was examiner in Master of Medicine (M. Med) and sat on Board of Directors of Singapore Health Services from 2000 till 2006. He remains active in clinical cancer research and he continues to participate in Phase III clinical trials on novel anti-cancer agents. He enrolled patients in several international phase III clinical trials using PTK 787 in Confirm 1, lapatinib in breast cancer, IPASS in NSCLC with Iressa and E7389 in breast cancer. He is recruiting patients for several ongoing trials using Neratinib in breast cancer, oral talactoferrin in lung cancer and nimotumumab in metastatic brain disease.
